Islanders halt Red Wings’ winning streak at six

Mathew Barzal scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, Brock Nelson scored twice and the visiting New York Islanders snapped the Detroit Red Wings’ six-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory on Thursday night.Casey Cizikas and Pierre Engvall also scored for the Islanders, while Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves.During a scramble in front of the Detroit net with about six minutes to play, the puck squirted to the right side. Barzal fired it toward the goal crease and Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon knocked it in with his left skate.Detroit’s Patrick Kane extended his point streak to 10 games with a goal. Olli Maatta scored the Wings’ two other goals, while Lyon stopped 22 shots.The Red Wings didn’t have a shot on goal for the first eight minutes. Just after Detroit killed off the Islanders’ second power play, Nelson made a steal in the Red Wings’ zone and scored on a wrister.Cizikas’ seventh goal of the year came when he redirected Adam Pelech’s shot from the point. Noah Dobson had the second assist on the goal, which came at 16:18 of the first period.The Red Wings ramped up the pressure on Sorokin in the second and broke through on Maatta’s goal at 5:04. He ripped a slapshot from the left circle off David Perron’s feed from behind the net.
